What Is Interoception?
The word interoception combines the Latin interior, meaning “within,” and perception, referring to the process of sensing and interpreting information. When experiences become overwhelming, the organism naturally reorganises itself to maximise survival. Attention narrows, breathing changes, muscular tension increases, autonomic activity shifts, and awareness may become focused on immediate threat rather than on the body’s broader internal experience. These adaptive responses help protect the organism during periods of danger.
If overwhelming experiences become chronic or remain unresolved, however, interoceptive awareness itself may become altered. Some individuals become highly sensitive to internal sensations, noticing every change in heartbeat, breathing, muscle tension, or visceral activity.
